Bike love made in FRM

In FrankfurtRheinMain we love our bicycles. Why? Because in the region you are only a bike ride away from everything. There is almost no better way to get around, explore the nature and at the same time do something for your fitness. In addition, to rather flat stretches, e.g. along the rivers Rhein and Main, there are even imposing trails in the Taunus or Spessart, home to Grimm’s tales, or in the Odenwald. Further, the region does not only have many great cycle paths to offer, the region’s also a bike innovation centre where bicycles are made and designed. So why not get on the saddle and spend the Indian summer on the cycling paths of the region? First, you should get yourself the right equipment and we will tell you where to find your unicum made in the FrankfurtRheinMain region!

Storck, Idstein im Taunus

Starting with his parents’ bicycle shop in Frankfurt am Main, Markus Storck had already developed his first ideas for others like a brake booster for Bike-tech MTB until he launched his own brands. Since 1995, he has been establishing several completely new brands and technologies onto the German market with his own company named Storck and has won numerous design awards for its bicycles. The Idstein based company not only equips top athletes, but also uses the technologies and knowledge for urban bicycles – top technology and design from FrankfurtRheinMain available all over the world.

Riese & Müller, Weiterstadt

With Riese & Müller it all began with two engineers, a good idea and a garage. Nevertheless, not in California, rather in the south of FrankfurtRheinMain, in Darmstadt, to be more precise. Immediately after the company was founded, it has been awarded with the Innovation Prize in 1993 and has grown to become an internationally renowned premium manufacturer of E-Bikes, folding and special bikes. As previously, Riese & Müller manufactures the most innovative bikes of tomorrow with the passion of “yesteryear”. Therefore, if you are looking for a special bike they have got one for your needs. May it be one for 2-4 children or the dog, a cargo bicycle or a simple e-bike – manufactured still in Weiterstadt, not far from the old garage ;).

Cucuma, Darmstadt

Darmstadt and its bikes! In the huge sales and production hall of the brand Cucuma, also located in the south of the Frankfurt region, everyone can adapt its own perfectly customized bike and watch how the professionals work. You choose the style of the bike, frame colour, decor and personalized equipment and thus create your own dream bike. It will then be assembled in Darmstadt and delivered to your home or you can pick it up.

Berner Bikes, Odenwald

For many years, Berner Bikes has been the address for individual bikes with outstanding riding characteristics and accessories. Since 1981, the bikes have been built in a workshop in the Odenwald with perfection and above all a love of detail. The goal is to create frames and attachments in such a way that everything fits the rider as if it was tailor-made. New designs, on well-chosen frames with proven geometries, as well as the product line “Leichtsinn”, make every bike a one of a land.

You successfully found the perfect bike? Then how about a little tour: Around 550 kilometres of cycle paths in the FrankfurtRheinMain regional park are waiting to be explored. From tours in the Frankfurter green belt, the “heart of the regional park” west to the Rheingau or east into the Kinzig valley. From challenging trails to relaxed rides to popular destinations, FrankfurtRheinMain has it all 😉

Competitiveness wanted? Then checkout the cycle race “Eschborn-Frankfurt”, which annually takes place on May 1st and being of the most important German one-day races. Although the competition regularly brings the world’s best cyclists to Frankfurt and the Taunus mountains, everyone can follow in the footsteps of the pros over three distances. Besides that, during summer there are many smaller MTB and street races in FankfurtRheinMain. If you prefer the mix of swimming, cycling and running, then take a look at events like the Frankfurt City Triathlon, Woog-Sprint in Darmstadt or the Rodgau Triathlon…

FrankfurtRheinMain reads: Buchmesse 2018

Reading a book is like starting a journey and where else can you find your next destination better than at a book fair – more exactly the Frankfurt Buchmesse. From October 10th to 14th, we are invited to immerse into the world of literature.

Each year, the world’s most important fair for the print and digital content business welcomes around 286 000 trade and private visitors at its home in the heart of FrankfurtRheinMain. For five days publishing experts, writers and cultural enthusiasts from all over the world come together. The host country this year is Georgia and will present its literature and culture. In addition to its presence at the fair, there will be readings and talks with Georgian writers, e. g. at the Literaturhaus in Wiesbaden and in Giessen.

A part of the Buchmesse that should not be underestimated takes place outside of the exhibition halls and is called “Bookfest”. As soon as the gates close, the program carries on in the city of Frankfurt and the whole region. Various events in numerous off locations bring you closer to the world of the authors: solve exciting criminal cases yourself, enjoy numerous readings or listen to a selection of the best slam poets in Germany. More music wanted? Then you shouldn’t miss out the club evening with the Urban Club Band in Frankfurt’s Gibson club, which stands for an unmistakably stirring and unique club sound live on stage. Alternatively, would you rather become active yourself and try out recipes together with cookbook authors? No, problem – there are always exciting things going on everywhere in the city. Check out the bookfest program here and see for yourself!

During the Book Fair, the entire world of literature will be visiting FrankfurtRheinMain, one more reason to look at the people who write for the world from our region. The writer Cornelia “Nele” Neuhaus, for example, makes the Taunus, north of Frankfurt, her crime scenes in her books. While their actions are concretely set in the Frankfurt area, Martin Mosebach’s place of writing has less influence on his stories. In 2007, he was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize, the most important literary prize in the German-speaking world, for his joy in telling stories and his humorous stories, which are at home in many genres, from novels to film screenplays to opera librettos and reportages. Also awarded the Büchner Prize are the works of Wilhelm Genazino, whose prose usually focuses on a middle-aged man living in a medium-sized German city, which is presumably Frankfurt as it is also the author’s place of residence.

FrankfurtRheinMain goes Coworking

The modern working world demands more and more flexibility on the part of the employees. Working and meetings in different cities are almost part of our daily life. However, the offices that are vacant at this time represent an enormous and not to be underestimated cost factor – this is a problem, especially for smaller companies and the self-employed. This is why coworking spaces are enjoying growing popularity, especially in the major business regions. FrankfurtRheinMain is no exception here either.

Coworking spaces are, on the one hand, a good way to spend your money according to your needs and on the other hand, you can easily get in touch with other people and share experiences. Therefore, coworking offers the suitable alternative for renting an own office. The workplaces and offices are usually available 24/7 and can be booked on a daily or weekly basis, as required. In addition, the majority of coworking spaces offer the option of renting conference rooms at hourly rates and provide the infrastructure necessary for professional work, from the printer to the fax machine to fast internet. Some even offer further amenities like event spaces, soda fountains, coffee bars or even childcare. Most of the coworking spaces unite state-of-the-art equipment with central location, easily accessible from everywhere. In addition to that, sophisticated concepts with stylish furniture are giving them a certain glam factor. Within the last years many coworking spaces are accessible and meanwhile they are spread everywhere in the FrankfurtRheinMain area. Feel free to choose wherever you would like to stay and cowork!

Friedberger Platz, Frankfurt am Main

Every Friday pure joy of life brings the people together at the “Friedberger Platz” in Frankfurt. Every week the market becomes a social meeting place in the evening. Celebrating the end of the workweek brings them all together. Many of them are enjoying a snack, meet friends there after work or prepare for the evening with an aperitif – completely relaxed and easy.

After-Work-Shipping Wiesbaden – Mainz

Biebrich Castle, vineyards in the evening light, and picturesque wine-growing villages: this is the backdrop for the after-work shipping of the special kind. After work is done, up on the ship and off with the lines – in the company of colleagues and friends the shipping tour from Wiesbaden to Mainz is the place to go. Partying, laughing and dancing while listening to the DJ and enjoying the great landscape along the river – an oasis between two strenuous office days. Until the end of September, you can treat yourself to this pleasure, and enjoy FrankfurtRheinMain from the water.

FrankfurtRheinMain – perfect match for the automotive sector

Germany and the automotive industry have a long history. It is the country, where Carl Benz produced the first automobile back in the 19th century. Today, Germany is the fourth largest motor vehicle manufacturer in the world after China, the USA and Japan. The industry is a driving force for many other branches of industry; a large network of suppliers from mechanical engineering, metal processing, textile and chemical industries supplies the automotive industry and benefits from its high order volume.

Although automotive competence centers is spread all over Germany, there are areas where the automotive know-how is more concentrated: one of these locations is FrankfurtRheinMain. The region is a highly profitable place for value-adding companies within the whole vertical supply chain, e.g. tires, safety, lightweight design, dyes, parts and services.

Also progress and research is of great importance in the region. The greater Frankfurt area is home of the European design and R&D centres of many international players. Especially for Korean and Japanese automotive manufacturers the region is the preferred location for design and R&D. The short distances to their clients were the main argument to the numerous R&D competence centers of OEMs, round 70 engineering service providers and over 400 tier-1/2/3 suppliers to settle in FrankfurtRheinMain. There is no domination by any OEM, the Frankfurt area is rather seen as a neutral region which is characterised by a very cooperative climate (industry map) with strong ties to all relevant OEM production sites in Europe.

Enabled by stable political and legal conditions on the one hand, and by the proximity to a highly skilled workforce through the region’s universities and technical colleges on the other hand, a strong industrial cluster has been created and it is still growing. In favour of short delivery times and state of the art freight villages, FrankfurtRheinMain is the location of choice due to its central geographical location in continental Europe.

The Frankfurt region enjoys excellent transport connections by road, rail and air – one more reason why the Automechanika takes place here every two years alternating with the IAA Passenger Cars (International Motor Show).

The startup scene in FrankfurtRheinMain

Known as the financial centre of Continental Europe, the Frankfurt region is the perfect starting environment for startups. The region has a long history of innovation, like being home to the world’s first airline and it is not surprising that it is home to a fast-growing startup hub (not only in the FinTech area).

The greater Frankfurt areas strengths lie in the decentralization. Every area in FrankfurtRheinMain has its specialty in a different field and owns major expertise. From the European Space Operations Centre of ESA in Darmstadt through to the financial hub Frankfurt and the knowledge of the research-heavy universities in the cities of Darmstadt, Frankfurt and Mainz. Indeed a lot of startups have close partnerships with universities, provide internships for undergraduates, and are willing to incorporate talents straight from universities.

The great number of large companies located in FrankfurtRheinMain (like Merck KGaA, Sanofi, Schott, Opel or Fresenius) is also a big advantage for the startup environment. Next to the financial scene, companies are an important capital source and potential cooperation partners, as well as trainers and mentors for young entrepreneurs.

Many established international companies are choosing Frankfurt as their first location in Europe to set up branches and enter the European market. Recently Bareburger, Five Guys, Chipotle and WeWork acted that way, to name just a few.

The FrankfurtRheinMain is home to many successful managers, investors and serial entrepreneurs being able to invest in startups. Added to this Germany’s largest business angel associations, many private equity and venture capital funds are headquartered here. Accelerators and incubators can provide support and good opportunities for further development of the businesses from an early stage on. The greater Frankfurt area offers different options with different focusses, so each startup can choose the one that fits best their needs and industry.

All those factors led to a very active FrankfurtRheinMain startup community. With round 50% year-on-year growth, it is getting more and more importance within the region.

Within the community various events, meetups and congresses with different emphasis take place almost every week. To keep track of those startup-related events take a look at StartupDigestFrankfurt-Rhein-Main, HalloFrankfurt or Rhein-Main Startups. Regular events are:

  • PitchClub
  • Founders Table Frankfurt: Monthly meeting of local startups
  • Open Coffee Club: Local chapter of the open coffee club. Breakfast once a month where startups and investors meet each other
  • Gründerfrühstück Wiesbaden: Regular breakfast for founders in the Wiesbaden region
  • FinTech in and around Frankfurt

If you want to look behind the scenes of FrankfurtRheinMain’s startup and innovation ecosystem, you should definitely not miss “Startup Safari FrankfurtRheinMain 2018”: Once a year, interested people are getting the chance to visit the whole scene. Be there when startups, companies, incubators and accelerators open their offices, coworking spaces or rooftop terraces for visitors – in Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Mainz, Offenbach and Wiesbaden.
